The current project will realign the Transitway parallel to the VIA Rail tracks to create a through station that connects the existing Woodroffe Avenue Transitway from the north to another section of Transitway south of Fallowfield Road, which will be completed next spring. The future Southwest Transitway link, from the reconfigured Fallowfield Station to Barrhaven Centre, will improve overall travel time for residents in the growing community of Barrhaven.

Additional improvements include:

relocating platform waiting areas and bus stops to the new section of Transitway
installing new spacious shelters
modifying the Park & Ride area and increasing the parking by approximately 70 more spaces
creating a pedestrian-friendly plaza-style crosswalk that will facilitate easier and safer movement by transit users from the parking lot to the station platform.

The project will be completed in several stages, and every attempt will be made to minimize the impact on transit customers. However, there will be work that will affect traffic entering and leaving the parking areas as well as pedestrian crosswalks and bus stops. The number of parking spaces may also be affected temporarily. Signage will be posted to redirect vehicles and customers during the construction. Access to the VIA Rail Station will be unchanged. The project is expected to be completed later this fall.

Alternative Park & Ride facilities are also available at Strandherd Transit Station, which can accommodate 336 vehicles. The station is located between Strandherd Drive and Berrigan Drive, and is well-served by Route 95, seven days a week.

Following completion of this project, the Barrhaven community will have a total 1,431 Park & Ride spaces.

The Fallowfield Transit Station and Transitway improvements will cost $3.4 million. Costs for this project are funded through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund program and shared three ways by the Government of Canada, Province of Ontario and City of Ottawa.
