Free transit service after 10 p.m. on Canada Day
Ottawa - Take OC Transpo to the Canada Day festivities and fireworks and get a free ride home after 10 p.m. It’s the best option for residents and visitors heading downtown.  OC Transpo will operate a Sunday schedule on July 1, with additional service during the day and following the fireworks on Parliament Hill. On Friday, July 2, a reduced weekday schedule will run, as ridership is expected to be lower than normal following the holiday. Schedules are available at octranspo.com.  Be sure to head out by 7:30 p.m. if you’re going downtown to see the fireworks. Plenty of free parking will be available at Park & Ride lots across the city or you can Rack & Roll and take advantage of the NCCs bike valet service at three official sites: Parliament Hill, Major's Hill Park and Jacques-Cartier Park. Plan your return trip in advance, as the last local buses will depart Transitway Stations at around 11:30 p.m. or midnight.
Fares
• Free service after 10 p.m. on all OC Transpo and STO bus routes and the O-Train. Regular fares will apply until 10 p.m. Children age 5 and under ride free all day.
• Free transit all day for seniors presenting a ticket to the Mayor’s Breakfast at Lansdowne Park.
• Families can travel all day with a DayPass available on the bus for $7.50. A family includes up to six people, with a maximum of two who are 12 or older.
Thousands of free Park & Ride spaces
• Thousands of spaces will be available at ten OC Transpo Park & Ride lots served by high-frequency Transitway routes 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 or 99 and the O-Train.
• Many more spaces will be available courtesy of Bayshore Shopping Centre, Billings Bridge Shopping Centre, Carlingwood Shopping Centre, Place d’Orléans Shopping Centre, South Keys Shopping Centre and St. Laurent Centre, as well as Algonquin College, Carleton University and Canada Post (Heron/Riverside).
Leave early and arrive in time
• Due to the large crowds, plan to leave home early to arrive in time for the fireworks.
• Bus detours will be in effect downtown due to road closures.
• Mackenzie King Bridge will be closed to pedestrians after 7 p.m., so no passengers can be picked up or dropped off at that station in the evening.
• After the fireworks, buses will be available on Slater, Albert and Bank Streets.
Information and ticket sales on July 1
• OC Transpo’s Rideau Centre Sales office will sell tickets and passes from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
• An OC Transpo information booth will be located at Confederation Square across from the Chateau Laurier from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Further information is available by calling OC Transpo Information at 613-741-4390 (open July 1 between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.) and by visiting octranspo.com.

City urges everyone to practice water safety this summer:

Ottawa - The City and its Ottawa Drowning Prevention Coalition partners are urging residents to practice water safety and ensure everyone’s summer is memorable – for all the right reasons.
As municipal beaches and outdoor pools open for the season, the Coalition says everyone has a role to play in reducing the number of drownings that occur in the Capital every year.
Ottawa averages five drownings every year. In fact, drowning is one of the leading causes of injury-related death for Canadian children under the age of four.
"With hot and humid weather coming earlier than usual this season, it's important Ottawa residents remember key water safety practices when they are looking to cool off in pools or waterways," said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee. "Wearing appropriate and certified personal floatation devices and keeping young children closely supervised and within arm's reach are key to preventing drownings."
"Children under age five are the least capable to self-rescue of any age group and need close and constant supervision by an adult," said Gillian Baker, Community Service Coordinator of the Canadian Red Cross – Ottawa Branch, adding that residents going out in canoes, boats or recreational watercraft should also always wear a life jacket.
City beaches open June 19 and some city wading pools are scheduled to open starting June 25. The Ottawa Drowning Prevention Coalition, which includes Ottawa Public Health, Ottawa Paramedic Services, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Police Service, The Lifesaving Society, the Canadian Red Cross- Ottawa Branch and the Dovercourt Recreation Centre, encourages city residents to follow these water safety tips:

·         Stay within arm’s reach of your child at all times in and around the water
·         Enroll yourself and your children in swimming lessons and learn CPR and First Aid
·         Always wear a personal floatation device when you are in a boat or a watercraft
·         Be vigilant - drowning occurs most commonly in swimming pools, often during a lapse of adult supervision
·         Install four-sided fencing around all pools, measuring at least 5 feet or 1.5 metres high and including a self-latching and self-closing gate
Being aware of the risks and taking preventative steps are the best ways to prevent drowning and near drowning.
