Green bin keeps waste out of landfill PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 February 2010

Ottawa – The City of Ottawa congratulates residents for using their green bins and helping divert 2,000 tonnes of organic material from area landfills. This material is returned to the earth as compost.

Just as residents have participated in the blue and black box recycling programs, Ottawa residents are now using their green bins and doing their part to divert organic material out of local landfill sites. Communities such as Orleans, Stittsville and the Glebe have already demonstrated strong participation in the green bin program.

In fact, across the city residential diversion rates in January 2010 are up 20 per cent over January 2009. Participation in the Green Bin program is resulting in the biggest increase in residential diversion in years and directly translates into less waste headed to the landfill. This is a strong start to the Green Bin program. Using your Green Bin is one more way we can ensure our community is cleaner and greener for everyone.

We would like to remind residents, that our Green Bin program does not allow plastics of any kind, including biodegradable or compostable plastics. If you wish to use bin liners, please use paper only.
